The Bulgarian Orthodox Church is among the oldest of the Slavic Orthodox Churches, with roots in the Christianisation of Bulgaria in the 9th century. Its primate is the Patriarch of Bulgaria, seated in Sofia; the patriarchal dignity was restored in 1953.
