Mount Athos (Holy Community)

Protos of the Holy Community · Karyes · est. 963

The monastic republic on the Athonite peninsula, under Constantinople but keeping the Old Calendar.

Mount Athos, the Holy Mountain, is a self-governed monastic republic of twenty ruling monasteries on the Athonite peninsula in northern Greece. Spiritually under the Ecumenical Patriarchate, it keeps the Old (Julian) Calendar and the strict monastic fasting typikon, a discipline distinct from its New-Calendar mother church. Its affairs are administered by the Holy Community at Karyes.
